Production-based engine

What it is: An engine lifted from the road car: the Cayman GT4 runs a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six, the BMW M4 GT4 and Toyota GR Supra GT4 a turbo 3.0-litre six. Output is roughly 400–500 hp.
Why it matters: Being production-based, it's comparatively cheap to run and lasts a season without a rebuild. For a beginner, predictable delivery matters more than peak power.
What it costs: €60–120k; The figure depends on the make and on whether the engine is new or factory-refreshed.
Remember this: The Cayman GT4's engine is nearly the road car's — the difference is software and exhaust.

Steel brakes with ABS

What it is: GT4 runs steel discs, not carbon — some cars carry them straight over from the production sports version. ABS watches the brakes, so locking a wheel is nearly impossible.
Why it matters: Steel is cheap, easy to service and forgiving — ideal for learning braking points. Carbon would stop better but cost several times more.
What it costs: €4–8k per set
Remember this: A whole season of steel discs can cost less than a single GT3 carbon set.

Tyres

What it is: Single-supplier slicks — usually Pirelli — on 18-inch wheels, smaller and narrower than in GT3. The number of sets per race weekend is limited.
Why it matters: Less grip means the car starts sliding earlier and more gently — the best teacher for finding the limit. That's why GT4 is called the school before GT3.
What it costs: €500–800 per tyre; One car gets through several sets across a weekend.
Remember this: One set typically lasts a single weekend — then the tyres go to recycling, not to the next track.

Wing and splitter

What it is: A modest rear wing and a flat blade under the front bumper (a splitter) press the car into the tarmac a little. Far less downforce than GT3 — no aero exotica here.
Why it matters: When aero is weak, the winner is whoever balances the chassis better, not whoever has the cleverer wing. GT4 teaches you to feel the car rather than trust the air.
What it costs: €15–30k per package
Remember this: Most GT4 wing angles adjust with a plain spanner — no electronics or hydraulics.

Production bodyshell

What it is: GT4 is built not on a bespoke prototype but on the same bodyshell that rolls off the factory line — even the windscreen frame is production. An FIA-spec roll cage is welded inside.
Why it matters: The production shell is the main reason GT4 is the cheapest real racing car: no carbon-fibre cell costing hundreds of thousands to develop.
What it costs: Included in the base price
Remember this: You'd see the same Supra or Cayman shell in a showroom — just without the cage and with leather inside.

Suspension

What it is: Racing adjustable dampers bolt onto production suspension arms. The geometry stays close to the road car's — which keeps the price down too.
Why it matters: It's simple to tune: a mechanic changes ride height or stiffness and the car behaves differently. This is where a beginner learns what every setting does.
What it costs: €15–30k
Remember this: The road car's suspension arms often serve unchanged all season — they were designed for sport anyway.

Gearbox

What it is: A sequential racing box or the production sports gearbox, shifted by paddles at the wheel — you change gear without letting go. Some models run the very same box as the road car.
Why it matters: Paddles let you give all your attention to the corners instead of a clutch — one less thing to think about while learning. Shifts take a blink, and the car stays calm mid-corner.
What it costs: €20–40k
Remember this: The BMW M4 GT4's gearbox is nearly the road M4's — just shifted faster and working louder.

Roll cage

What it is: A lattice of steel tubes welded inside the shell to FIA requirements — the essential difference from a road car. In a crash it protects the driver even if the car rolls over.
Why it matters: No approved cage, no GT4 race — it's that simple. It also stiffens the shell, so the car behaves more precisely in corners.
What it costs: €15–30k
Remember this: The cage is strong enough that the car can come to rest on its roof — and the driver still has room to climb out.

Cockpit

What it is: Everything a GT3 cockpit has — racing seat, multi-function wheel, digital dash — only simpler. Because amateur (AM) drivers race here so often, comfortable ergonomics matter extra.
Why it matters: In pro-am line-ups one cockpit must fit both a professional and an amateur, so the seat and pedals adjust in seconds. A comfortable driver makes fewer mistakes.
What it costs: €10–20k
Remember this: Many GT4s even keep the production air conditioning — a rare luxury in a racing car.

ABS & traction control

What it is: As in GT3, ABS and traction control (TC) are allowed: electronics stop the wheels locking under braking and calm excess power on corner exit.
Why it matters: For a beginner it's an insurance policy: a mistake in the braking zone costs tenths, not a crash into the barriers. With experience the electronic help can be wound back.
What it costs: Included / €5–15k for control units
Remember this: Similar control units work in GT3 cars costing three times as much.

Tank and fuel

What it is: For safety the tank gets a quick-fill valve, but the tank itself is the production item. A sprint race of up to an hour runs on a single full tank.
Why it matters: No endurance-style fuel maths: fill up before the start and run to the flag. Strategy is about tyres and the driver change, not litres.
What it costs: €3–6k per season
Remember this: The GT4 tank is the road car's own — it just gains a racing filler valve on top.

Wheels

What it is: 18-inch alloy rims — smaller and simpler than in GT3. They're mass-produced, which keeps the price friendly.
Why it matters: Next to GT3, wheels are pocket money here: a set costs several times less, so a team can carry spares for the whole weekend.
What it costs: €1–2k per wheel
Remember this: For the price of four GT3 wheels, a GT4 team can buy a whole season's stock.
