How a racing kart works

Engine (125cc two-stroke)

What it is: A 125cc single-cylinder two-stroke — it burns petrol mixed with oil and revs to ~15,000 rpm. In TaG trim it starts at a button (starter and battery on board); OK is direct drive, without them.
Why it matters: 34–46 hp sounds modest, but the whole kart weighs ~80 kg, so it out-accelerates plenty of sports cars. A two-stroke answers the throttle instantly — it teaches precise power control.
What it costs: €2.5–4.5k per unit
Remember this: On power-to-weight a kart beats many sports cars — the whole thing weighs only ~80 kg.

Chassis (no suspension)

What it is: A chrome-molybdenum steel tube frame — a kart has no suspension at all, so the frame's flex is the suspension. It's built to twist slightly in a corner.
Why it matters: How the frame flexes decides how weight sits on the four tyres. Teams tune a kart not with springs but with the frame itself — its flex is the main setting.
What it costs: €2.5–3.5k bare frame
Remember this: In a normal car a flexing frame would be a fault — in a kart it's the main cornering mechanism.

Rear axle (no differential)

What it is: A solid steel axle locks both rear wheels together — they always turn at the same speed. There is no differential (the mechanism that lets wheels turn at different speeds) in a kart.
Why it matters: In a corner the inside wheel has less distance to travel, so a kart turns by unloading and lifting the inside rear wheel — the flexing frame and axle do that. Lift it too late and the kart hops and loses grip.
What it costs: €150–400 per unit
Remember this: Axle stiffness is chosen like a gear: a softer or stiffer axle changes the whole kart's behaviour.

Tyres (slicks)

What it is: Soft treadless slicks — supplied by MG, LeCont or Maxxis depending on the class. The contact patch is palm-sized, and a set lasts roughly one race weekend.
Why it matters: They're the kart's only contact with the track — their condition decides braking, cornering and acceleration. A worn set costs tenths of a second every lap.
What it costs: €200–260 per set
Remember this: A quick driver gets roughly one race weekend out of a soft set — sometimes less.

Brakes (rear only)

What it is: One hydraulic disc on the rear axle — that's all. There are no front brakes: only KZ shifter karts with gearboxes have them.
Why it matters: Most of the slowing is done by the engine itself when you lift off. Braking the rear alone means a heavy pedal locks the back wheels — brake feel is taught from the very first laps.
What it costs: €400–800 per system
Remember this: One brake disc is enough for the whole kart — engine braking does the other half of the work.

Seat

What it is: A fibreglass or carbon shell fitted to the driver's body. Its position and stiffness aren't about comfort — they're a weight-distribution tool.
Why it matters: The driver is most of the total weight, so mechanics move the seat by millimetres — that's how the balance and cornering behaviour are tuned.
What it costs: €200–600 per unit
Remember this: Move the seat a few millimetres and the kart behaves noticeably differently in corners.

Steering

What it is: A direct mechanical link with no power assistance: the ratio is nearly 1:1, and just two metal tie rods run from the wheel to the tyres.
Why it matters: No electronics, no filters — the driver feels every move of the tyres through the wheel. It's the best driving teacher: a mistake isn't masked, it's shown.
What it costs: €150–400 per unit
Remember this: There's not a single electronic part between wheel and tyres — the only power assist is the driver's arms.

Chain & sprockets

What it is: Power reaches the rear axle through a chain and two sprockets — front and rear. Their size pairing is the kart's entire gearbox.
Why it matters: Each track calls for its own ratio: one for punch out of corners, another for straight-line speed. Get the sprocket choice wrong and you lose everywhere.
What it costs: €50–150 per set
Remember this: It's the cheapest speed setting in karting: for a few dozen euros you change what bigger motorsport pays thousands for.

Bodywork (CIK-FIA)

What it is: A CIK-FIA homologated front fairing, side pods and rear bumper. It's basic aerodynamics and the first part to take the hits.
Why it matters: In modern karting the bodywork must stay in place: a loose or dropped front fairing means a penalty. Contact on track therefore hurts twice — in lap time and in the stewards' report.
What it costs: €200–400 per set
Remember this: Contact that car racing debates for a week often ends in karting as a five-second penalty for a dropped fairing.

Weight & ballast

What it is: In the senior class kart and driver together must weigh ~175 kg — checked on scales right after the finish. Lighter crews bolt lead ballast to the frame.
Why it matters: Ballast placement is a tuning tool: mount it further forward or back and the weight balance and cornering behaviour change.
What it costs: €20–50 per kg of ballast
Remember this: Weight is checked with the driver — after the finish you step on the scales in full helmet, suit and boots.

Fuel (petrol-oil mix)

What it is: A two-stroke burns petrol mixed with about 4 % special oil — there's no separate lubrication system. The tank holds ~8–9 litres.
Why it matters: Too little oil or too lean a mix and the engine seizes within minutes. Mechanics blend it to the millilitre, like pharmacists.
What it costs: ~€30–60 per weekend
Remember this: A dozen euros of oil protects a multi-thousand-euro engine — the cheapest insurance in the paddock.

Lap timer & telemetry

What it is: A MyChron or Alfano unit on the wheel shows lap times, engine RPM and temperature. After the session the data is reviewed on a computer.
Why it matters: It's the first step into data driving: instead of 'felt quicker', the driver sees exact fractions of a second in every corner. Practice becomes work with facts.
What it costs: €400–1k per unit
Remember this: For a few hundred euros you get the same kind of information F1 teams hire dozens of engineers for — just at a smaller scale.
