Engine (V4)

What it is: A 1000cc V4 spinning to ~18,000 rpm. Each factory gets a limited, sealed allocation per season — no rebuilding allowed.
Why it matters: It defines the bike's character: how it drives off corners decides more races than raw top speed.
What it costs: €250–450k per unit
Remember this: One MotoGP engine costs about the same as ~10 new 1000cc superbikes.

Aero & winglets

What it is: Carbon winglets and diffusers pressing the bike into the tarmac. Aero shape updates are homologation-limited per season.
Why it matters: It stops the front wheel lifting under acceleration and lets riders brake later. Aero is what turned modern MotoGP into an F1 on two wheels.
What it costs: €10–20k per wing set; A crash usually means replacing the whole set.
Remember this: At top speed the aero adds tens of kilograms of downforce — an invisible passenger pressing the bike down.

Carbon brakes

What it is: Ø340–355 mm carbon front discs that only work at several hundred degrees. In the rain they're swapped for steel.
Why it matters: Braking is where riders pull over 1.5 G. Whoever brakes later, overtakes.
What it costs: €70–100k per season
Remember this: Braking from 340 km/h heats the discs to ~800 °C — the surface temperature of lava.

Tyres

What it is: Spec Michelin slicks — no tread, three compounds, a fixed weekend allocation.
Why it matters: Two palm-sized contact patches connect 300 hp to the road. Sunday's tyre choice often IS the strategy.
What it costs: ~€1.5–2.5k per set
Remember this: Lean angle reaches ~64° — steeper than a slope you'd dare walk down.

Front suspension

What it is: Inverted Öhlins forks with carbon legs, tuned per track and often changed between sessions.
Why it matters: Suspension turns braking violence into information: how much grip the front has left. A bad setup crashes you without warning.
What it costs: €80–120k per package
Remember this: Under braking the forks compress in a blink — the whole bike's weight lands on one wheel.

Frame & swingarm

What it is: A twin-spar aluminium frame and, increasingly, a carbon swingarm. Stiffness is tuned directionally — flex where useful, rigid where not.
Why it matters: At full lean the suspension barely works — the frame itself becomes the suspension. It's the subtlest science on the bike.
What it costs: Tens to hundreds of thousands €; Exact figures are unpublished — it's the factories' best-kept secret.
Remember this: Factories test several frames a season — riders feel the difference, only data can explain it.

Electronics & ECU

What it is: A spec Magneti Marelli ECU with unified software plus dozens of sensors: traction control, wheelie control, engine braking.
Why it matters: Electronics let the rider open the throttle at the physical limit in every corner — 200 times a second.
What it costs: €50–150k (sensors + loom)
Remember this: A weekend generates gigabytes of telemetry — engineers see a corner in more detail than the rider feels it.

Exhaust

What it is: A handmade titanium/Inconel system (usually Akrapovič) weighing just a few kilograms.
Why it matters: It shapes the power curve: the same engine drives off corners completely differently with a different pipe.
What it costs: €15–25k
Remember this: A MotoGP start hits ~130 dB — the pain threshold of human hearing.

Chain & seamless gearbox

What it is: A six-speed seamless gearbox shifts with zero drive interruption; a conventional — but perfect — chain takes power to the wheel.
Why it matters: Every uninterrupted shift means a calmer bike at lean and hundredths per lap. Over a race distance — whole seconds.
What it costs: €100–200k (gearbox estimate)
Remember this: A seamless shift is faster than a blink — drive interruption is effectively zero.

Ride-height device

What it is: A mechanical-hydraulic system that squats the bike for starts and acceleration. Banned by rule from 2027.
Why it matters: A lower bike wheelies less, so it puts power down sooner. Off the line it's a weapon for positions.
What it costs: Six-figure development cost
Remember this: The rider arms it with a button — braking itself releases it. Pure mechanical intelligence.

Fairing

What it is: The carbon shell hiding all the hardware and shaping airflow around bike and rider.
Why it matters: Minimum drag on the straight, stability in crosswinds. Every edge is an aero decision, not styling.
What it costs: €15–30k painted
Remember this: One gravel crash usually sends the fairing to the bin — along with a month's salary.

Tank & fuel

What it is: 22 litres allowed for a race, minimum 40% non-fossil fuel. From 2027 — 100%.
Why it matters: The fuel limit forces the electronics to save fuel even in a title fight — last laps are sometimes won on Friday, in a spreadsheet.
What it costs: Hundreds of € per litre (special fuel)
Remember this: The tank is sculpted around the rider — you don't sit on a MotoGP bike, you wedge into it.

Tail & rider position

What it is: The seat unit with ballast and the electronics core. The rider is a component too: body position changes balance and aero.
Why it matters: Without rider weight transfer the bike simply isn't fast — which is why champions train like decathletes.
What it costs: Priceless (the rider part)
Remember this: Riders lose up to half a litre of fluids per stint — a race is ~40 minutes at maximum heart rate.

Added up, a MotoGP prototype costs like a luxury house and weighs less than two riders. The most important part still sits in the saddle: the same bike differs by seconds in different hands. Now go see who's leading.
