5.86-litre V8 engine

What it is: A naturally aspirated 358-cubic-inch V8 uses pushrods — an old, robust way to operate the valves. In 2026 the target is 750 hp on short tracks and road courses, with lower-output packages elsewhere.
Why it matters: With no turbo, the response is direct: the driver meters rear-tyre slip with the throttle. More power makes wheelspin easier out of a slow corner.
What it costs: $100–150k per engine; A public build-or-lease estimate; manufacturer contracts are private.
Remember this: One engine can take 80–132 hours to assemble and contains more than 3,000 components.

Five-speed sequential gearbox

What it is: A rear-mounted Xtrac gearbox and differential share one casing. Gears are selected in order by pulling or pushing the lever — there is no H-pattern.
Why it matters: Putting the gearbox at the rear improves weight distribution and makes room for a safer seat position. It also works with independent rear suspension.
What it costs: $25–40k per transaxle
Remember this: It is still mechanical: selecting a lower gear too early can break the internals in an instant.

Single-lug 18-inch wheels

What it is: One large centre nut, rather than five small ones, holds each forged-aluminium BBS wheel. It carries a wide 12-inch Goodyear Eagle tyre.
Why it matters: Fewer nuts do not mean less pressure: the centre nut must seat perfectly while five people work around the car. Four tyres and fuel take roughly 9–10 seconds.
What it costs: $6–10k for four wheels and tyres
Remember this: The best stops are quicker than reading this sentence — one 2023 four-tyre stop was recorded at 9.281 seconds.

Composite body

What it is: The white Camry lights and grille are body shape and decals — there is no road-car sheet metal underneath. Symmetrical composite panels attach to a common frame.
Why it matters: Composite survives light contact better than thin metal, while symmetry limits aerodynamic tricks. Each brand creates the look, but the core geometry is controlled.
What it costs: $20–35k per panel set
Remember this: The doors do not open — the driver climbs through the window, so the window net is both protection and doorway.

Common modular chassis

What it is: A steel-tube central safety cell has bolt-on front and rear clips. A crash-damaged end can be replaced without rebuilding the whole car.
Why it matters: Single-source parts limit expensive secret designs and let NASCAR control safety more closely. Speed comes from setup, not a different frame.
What it costs: $110–150k per chassis base
Remember this: Only the silhouette and badges come from a road Camry — underneath, all three manufacturers share the same Next Gen architecture.

Banked-oval setup

What it is: Independent suspension lets each wheel use springs, dampers and angles chosen for a specific oval's banking. The car is set to corner fast, not sit straight in the garage.
Why it matters: Banking helps hold the car in the turn, but load still moves to the right side. Poor balance overheats one tyre and removes grip quickly.
What it costs: $15–30k per suspension package
Remember this: Daytona's turns are banked at 31° — the car races on a wall that would feel almost unclimbable on foot.

Drafting and pack racing

What it is: The lead car parts the air and the following car enters a lower-drag zone. Several cars begin to act like one long aerodynamic shape.
Why it matters: The follower can save fuel and close in, but its radiator receives hotter air and its front axle loses downforce. In a pack, speed and risk rise together.
What it costs: $15–30k for underbody and aero panels
Remember this: At Daytona a lone car can be slower without another car's draft — your rival becomes part of your speed.

Safety cell and flaps

What it is: A tube frame, moulded seat, six-point belts, window net and impact foam surround the driver. Roof flaps and A-pillar flaps mandated for 2026 help stop the car lifting.
Why it matters: Replaceable outer clips should absorb the crash while the centre cell preserves the driver's space. Every safety part works as one system.
What it costs: $25–50k for seat and safety equipment
Remember this: The seat sits closer to the car's centreline — farther from a driver-side impact.

The radio spotter

What it is: A spotter high above the track radios whether a car is alongside: inside, outside, clear. The driver cannot see an entire three-wide pack in the mirrors.
Why it matters: At 200 mph, one short word turns a blind spot into another pair of eyes. The rear camera helps, but a person still turns the picture into a decision.
What it costs: $1–3k per radio kit
Remember this: Every 2026 Cup car carries camera connectivity, so fans can watch the same pack from the cockpit.

Fuel — with no gauge

What it is: About 20 US gallons (roughly 76 litres) of E15 fuel sits in a protected inner bladder. There is no fuel-level gauge in the cockpit — the team calculates the remainder from laps and data.
Why it matters: The driver saves by lifting earlier or switching off while coasting under caution. A bad calculation can turn the leader into a stopped car.
What it costs: $3–6k per fuel cell; Fuel and weekend servicing are separate.
Remember this: The team can predict the laps remaining even though the driver sees no fuel needle at all.

Short-track brakes

What it is: Six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers clamp 15- and 14-inch discs. NASCAR specifies light- or heavy-duty packages for each track's braking load.
Why it matters: The brakes barely rest at Daytona but heat every few seconds at Martinsville. The 2026 750-hp short-track package punishes overheating even more.
What it costs: $10–20k per complete package
Remember this: The same car can use light-duty brakes one week and a higher-heat-capacity package the next.
